Tokyo to Hiroshima Shinkansen: Japan's Classic Long-Distance Journey

Travel from Tokyo to Hiroshima by high-speed train is one of the great long-distance rail experiences in Japan. The Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines connect the two cities across 816 km (507 miles) in approximately 4 hours — with up to 29 daily departures. Taking the bullet train is faster than flying city centre to city centre, and far more comfortable than any alternative for a journey of this distance.

The fastest service on this route completes the journey in just under 4 hours with minimal stops, running directly from the capital through Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka onto the Sanyo Shinkansen — no transfer required. The Hikari Shinkansen also covers this corridor but requires a transfer at Shin-Osaka onto a Sakura or Kodama service, adding time to the journey. High speed trains depart from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station throughout the day.

The route passes through some of Japan's most famous cities — Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima — making it easy to combine multiple destinations. Mount Fuji is visible from the right side heading west, approximately 40–50 minutes after departure. Access between Tokyo and Hiroshima by Shinkansen is seamless — the shinkansen stations at both ends are centrally located with excellent onward connections.

Tokyo to Hiroshima Shinkansen Tickets: Prices, JR Pass & How to Book Train Tickets

Train tickets for this journey start from around ¥18,830 (approximately $125–130 USD) for an Ordinary Car reserved seat. Green Car tickets cost approximately ¥24,000–25,000. Ticket prices are fixed by JR — no early-bird discounts on standard fares.

Book train tickets from Tokyo online through Rail Ninja — search the route, select your departure and pay in your currency. You receive QR code tickets by email to collect as paper tickets at any JR station. Tickets in advance are strongly recommended — especially during Golden Week, Obon and New Year. Buy Shinkansen tickets up to one month before departure through JR directly, or earlier through Rail Ninja.

The Japan Rail Pass covers the Hikari Shinkansen at no additional fare — take the Hikari Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, then transfer onto the Sakura Shinkansen for the Sanyo Shinkansen leg to Hiroshima Station. Both services are covered by the rail pass. For a single journey, individual tickets purchased online are more straightforward. The best way to travel for pass holders is the Hikari and Sakura combination.

Reserved Seats, Travel Classes and Onboard Experience
All services on this route offer reserved seats, non-reserved cars and Green Car. A reserved seat is strongly recommended for a journey of this length — car number and seat number are printed on your Shinkansen ticket. Non-reserved seats are first-come, first-served. Green Car offers wider seating with more legroom — worth considering for a 4-hour train ride. Seats on Shinkansen trains are arranged in rows with power sockets and generous legroom even in standard class. The travel experience on Japan's bullet trains is genuinely impressive regardless of class.

For luggage, overhead racks handle standard bags. Oversized luggage requires a pre-booked designated space. Gran class is available on selected JR East Shinkansen trains on other routes; on this corridor the choice is between Ordinary Car and Green Car.
Hiroshima: What to See After You Arrive
Hiroshima Station connects directly to the city tram network serving all major sights. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Peace Memorial Park are approximately 15 minutes from the station. Hiroshima Castle is a short tram ride away. From Hiroshima, the JR West ferry to Miyajima Island (covered by the Japan Rail Pass) reaches the famous floating torii gate in 10 minutes. Osaka and Hiroshima are easily combined — the Sanyo Shinkansen connects them in around 1 hour 30 minutes. Hiroshima Airport is approximately 45 minutes from the city centre by bus, though most international visitors arrive via Shinkansen rather than Hiroshima Airport.
Tokyo Station, opened in 1914, is Japan's main rail hub and the heart of the Shinkansen network. Its iconic red-brick façade is one of Tokyo's architectural landmarks. All Nozomi Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima depart from Tokyo Station, with some services also stopping at Shinagawa Station 6 minutes south. Beyond transport, Tokyo Station features luxury hotels, shopping and dining. Popular routes from Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen include Tokyo to Kyoto, Tokyo to Osaka, Tokyo to Nagoya and the Tokyo to Hiroshima journey — all on the same line with no transfer needed on the Nozomi.
